Israel 2024 – May 19: Isabella Bodzin

On Sunday, our final day with our Beyachad group, we started our day with volunteering at Kolel Chabad’s Pantry Packers program. We worked in an assembly line to weigh, package, and seal bags of lentils, oats, and other dry foods. The staff put the bags into big boxes for Kolel Chabad to give out to the 37,000 people per month who need it.

While we were there, we learned about their different social welfare programs that help people all over Israel. One of the programs that they have is a debit card that they send families in need. They can use it to buy all the food they need. We also learned that the cards that they use, and all types of credit cards all around Israel, are printed in Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the kibbutzim that got hit hardest on October 7th. Miraculously, the printing factory was mostly unharmed in the attacks, and after two days, the factory opened back up and started helping people. It was a very inspiring story to see the people who worked at the printer come together and to see the new appreciation and gratitude they had for their work now that they were on the receiving end of the cards they printed.

After volunteering, we drove to a park and had a delicious pizza lunch and learned a bit about the different types of people that have migrated to Israel.
