Our Sveta Grinberg Read for Life Program kicked off on February 11th with great fanfare and excitement! As you may remember, this year’s theme, “Read Around the World”, was chosen by popular vote during our all-school election, which took place on election day. As a function of this theme, each grade has been assigned a country and, throughout the next several weeks, they will learn about that country through books and other activities. At the opening ceremony, students came dressed in their country’s colors and got into the spirit of what’s to come! Some highlights of this year’s program include: an interactive Hebrew Story Time, World Read Aloud Day (everyone read the same book and will be doing projects over the coming week about the story), a book swap (which was also tied into our World Read Aloud Day book!), an author visit, a middle school story fashion show, multi-cultural food tastings, parent/child book discussions and MORE! We’ll be featuring many of these activities in our weekly slideshows and classroom newsletters. Be sure to keep an eye out. This year, our reading program has been enhanced by the addition of reading corners in our classrooms. Generously funded by the Einhorn and Edelman family in memory of avid reader Barbara Edelman, late grandmother of Schechter students Kobi Einhorn (6th grade), Orly Einhorn (class of 2015) and Emily Einhorn (Class of 2013), teachers had the opportunity to design their very own reading corners to help encourage and facilitate a love of reading. Doesn’t the idea of curling up in a cozy chair with a good book just sound wonderful? Really! What could be better? See some of the pictures below. We hope you’ll join us at some of our upcoming Read for Life events, especially our parent/child book discussions. Your children love having you participate in the activities like these – they make for lifelong memories and help encourage a love of learning! Our Read for Life Program is made possible by a generous gift from Ida and Mikhail Grinberg in memory of their beloved daughter, an avid reader, Sveta Grinberg, and through the support of the school’s Sveta Grinberg Memorial Literacy Endowment Fund.
